Buying a used model is a great way to save money on your forklift purchase. However, before you buy a used forklift, you need to know what kind of condition it’s in and what kinds of maintenance it might need in the near future. That’s why the experts at CCon Metals have created this used forklift inspection guide.

Examine Forks

A forklift’s forks need to be sturdy enough to carry the weight of whatever cargo it is being used to transport. Examine both forks for any bends, cracks, or other signs that they need replacement. Also look at the fork blade’s heel. It should be as thick as the upright fork shank. If things look too thin, it’s time for a replacement.

Inspect Engine

Ask if you can run the used forklift’s engine for a few minutes. If you hear a strange noise or start to see smoke coming off it, that’s a bad sign. Also check that the engine oil is clean and has been topped off. Finally, make sure that the used forklift’s hoses are free of leaks and that the belts have been tightened and lubricated.

Watch For Leaks

The used forklift’s radiator, mast cylinders, and transmission should all be free of leaks. If you notice any fluid pooling under or around the forklift, major repairs will be needed in the near future.
